Deep learning models, neural networks, regression models, rule-based models, data, lots of data, and always a loosely defined problem to solve. With the pharmaceutical industry increasingly adopting AI and Machine Learning concepts to use within business analytics decision frameworks, step one in getting away from the “blur” of the conversation is selecting the business partner and data science team to get to actionable results. ACCURACY VS. INTERPRETABILITY 

Accuracy vs. Interpretability can be expressed only as “being able to explain why a model produces a given output” versus “the model outputs being as accurate as possible.” A perfect model is both entirely transparent and extremely accurate. While creating an ideal model is always the goal, the reality is that we are often forced to balance model interpretability and capability to suit the given problem.

DEEP LEARNING MODELS (“NEURAL NETWORKS”)

Increasingly popular deep learning models are on one extreme of model selection and are often labeled a “black box” approach. They are commonly found as the most capable and accurate methods but lack any valuable interpretation of the models’ calculated outcome.

Deep learning is typically the optimal solution for problems requiring little to no interpretability. Many applications value understanding over capability, meaning there’s more value in an explainable model than an accurate one.

REGRESSION MODELS 

On the other side of the spectrum are regression models. While these don’t typically boast the accuracy of deep learning models and require a stricter set of assumptions about the data, regression-based models can offer excellent interpretability. Therefore, it’s easier to tease out “why” a particular feature set becomes mapped to a specific outcome. When explicitly mapping data inputs to outputs is more useful than pure accuracy, then a regression model might be an appropriate solution.

RULE-BASED MODELS

Somewhere between deep learning and regression, lie rule-based models. These models typically don’t offer the black box accuracy of a deep learning model, or the excellent interpretation of a regression model, but modest capability at both. Rule-based models tend to make less strict assumptions about the data as well.
